A glimpse into Courchevel: the French alpine jewel favoured by celebrities

Courchevel, nestled in the French Alps, is a magnet for celebrities and winter sports lovers alike, combining breathtaking views with opulent amenities and ski experiences for all skill levels.

A Glimpse into Courchevel: The French Alpine Jewel Favoured by Celebrities

Nestled in the Tarentaise Valley of the French Alps, the charming village of Courchevel stands as a beacon for winter sports enthusiasts and luxury seekers alike. With its breathtaking scenery and top-tier amenities, Courchevel has consistently attracted not only seasoned skiers but also a host of famous personalities over the years.

An Elite Ski Destination

Courchevel has long been associated with opulence and prestige, drawing in a glamorous list of visitors including British royals William and Kate, pop icons like Elton John and Robbie Williams, as well as entertainment bigwigs such as the Beckhams and Gordon Ramsay. Brigitte Bardot, the iconic film star, is credited with initially placing Courchevel on the map as a luxury retreat in the 1960s, bolstered by its unique feature of an airstrip directly on the slopes for private jets, making access exclusive and convenient.

Affordable Access Amid Luxurious Surroundings

While Courchevel is synonymous with luxury, there are cost-effective ways to reach this alpine paradise. Notably, savvy travellers can snag return flights from London to Lyon for as low as £25 in January, providing a budget-friendly gateway to Courchevel and the broader French Alps region. This deal, offered by Wizz Air, reflects an increased interest in ski holidays, with Google searches for such trips surging by 97% and expected to peak between December and January.

Accommodation Fit for Royalty

Courchevel’s reputation for luxury is well-established with its array of accommodations. The Hôtel Les Airelles, often likened to a “fairy tale castle”, offers guests a lavish experience with opulent decor, an exceptional spa, and gourmet dining just steps away from the ski slopes. For those preferring a private retreat, the Grandes Alpes Private Hotel & Spa provides slope-side apartments complete with personal butlers and five-star dining.

The Hotel Cheval Blanc, part of the prestigious LVMH group, is another celebrity favourite, known for its spacious rooms and a world-class spa, along with Michelin-starred culinary offerings.

Culinary Delights and Nightlife Extravagance

Courchevel boasts an impressive number of Michelin stars, with 12 stars awarded across seven restaurants in the locale. Notable among these is the Pierre Gagnaire located at Les Airelles, which offers an exquisite two Michelin-starred dining experience, complemented by luxurious details such as Hermès tableware.

For those wishing to enjoy traditional alpine cuisine with a view, Le Pilatus offers delectable fondues and raclettes with vistas of Mont Blanc, having hosted the likes of Kate and William. Nightlife in Courchevel is equally opulent, with venues such as Les Caves de Courchevel Nightclub and La Grange drawing partygoers who favour lively summers in St Tropez.

Skiing Experiences for All Levels

Courchevel provides a diverse range of skiing opportunities to suit all skill levels. Courchevel 1850, the highest and most luxurious part of the area, offers a mix of beginner, intermediate, and expert slopes. The Granges run is ideal for intermediate skiers, while beginners can enjoy the slopes at Creux. Expert skiers can seek the thrill of the Couloirs de la Loze.

For families and those seeking a more relaxed atmosphere, Courchevel 1650, also known as Courchevel Moriond, provides beautiful tree-lined runs, while Courchevel 1550 offers easy access to the vast Trois Vallées ski area.

Overall Appeal

Despite the high-end nature of Courchevel, there are opportunities for budget-conscious travellers to experience its splendour, starting with low-cost flights. Nevertheless, enjoying Courchevel to its fullest, akin to its more illustrious visitors, requires a deeper expenditure once within the resort. Its unparalleled combination of world-class skiing, luxury accommodation, and exclusive dining and nightlife venues make it a unique winter haven in Europe.
