Boxpark Birmingham is set to open next year, creating a dynamic hub with dining, gaming and entertainment options under the historic railway arches.
In a recent development poised to breathe new life into Digbeth, Birmingham City Council has approved plans for the construction of Boxpark Birmingham. Boxpark Ltd, already a well-established name for its vibrant venues in London and Liverpool, is set to expand operations into the Midlands with this new addition, located strategically between Floodgate Street and Milk Street. The project is scheduled to open its doors to the public next year.
The new venue, which will be nestled under the historic railway arches, is designed to be a dynamic hub of activity. According to detailed design documents, Boxpark Birmingham will maintain the unique “cathedral-like character” of the arches, offering a blend of dining spaces, food and beverage units, and areas designated for social gaming activities such as shuffleboard and other table games. The venue aims to provide an all-day, family-friendly retail and entertainment experience, with open terraces and covered seating that encourage year-round engagement with the space.
Boxpark Ltd’s proposal highlights a commitment to revitalising the long-vacant and locally listed site into an attractive and high-quality entertainment venue. Plans are in place to activate the facades on both the Floodgate Street and Milk Street entrances, enhancing the visual and physical interaction with the surrounding streetscape. Improved accessibility and inclusive design principles have also been integrated into the proposal to accommodate all visitors.
The location, under the Floodgate Street arches, is described as an ideal setting for the project, seen as a potential catalyst for the wider regeneration of the Digbeth area. A council officer’s report in support of the proposal emphasised the project’s role in bolstering Digbeth’s status as a cultural hub within Birmingham’s wider cityscape, as well as its contribution to the night-time economy. The report confirmed that there would be no adverse impact on heritage assets.
Once operational, Boxpark Birmingham is expected to create approximately 200 new jobs, significantly boosting local employment. Additionally, the project is anticipated to increase footfall in the area, contributing to Digbeth’s economic growth.
