Brighton’s Big Dip to celebrate inclusivity and community spirit

This Saturday, hundreds will plunge into the chilly English Channel for The Big Dip, raising funds for Switchboard while celebrating the LGBTQIA+ community and fostering connections among swimmers.

This Saturday marks the celebration of a unique and meaningful event on Brighton’s picturesque coastline. Hundreds of swimmers are gearing up to take part in The Big Dip, a mass plunge into the chilly waters of the English Channel aimed at raising funds for Switchboard, a national helpline. This initiative commemorates an impressive milestone as Switchboard, known for providing vital support across the United Kingdom, celebrates its 200th anniversary.

The Big Dip is set to be inaugurated by former professional swimmer Michael Gunning, who is well-regarded both for his athletic achievements and his advocacy for the LGBTQIA+ community. Gunning, reflecting on his involvement, expressed his enthusiasm for the event, noting the significant role water has played in his life. He highlights the swimming event as an opportunity to unite the community, celebrate inclusivity, and promote both physical and mental well-being.

Organised by Pride Swim, a vibrant series founded by Polly Shute, The Big Dip stands as the climatic finale of a series of 20 Pride Swims held across the UK throughout the year. Shute shares that Brighton was chosen as the fitting location for this crowning event due to its longstanding association with the LGBTQIA+ community. The city’s welcoming atmosphere and cultural diversity make it an ideal backdrop for such an event, which not only highlights the positive benefits of swimming but also strives to foster deeper connections within the queer community.

Participants will gather near Brighton’s Sea Lanes on Saturday afternoon, geared up to brave the autumn chill and take a flagship dip into the sea at 2pm. This inaugural event in Brighton is expected to lay the groundwork for what organisers and participants hope will become an annual highlight on the city’s social calendar—a celebratory coming together of individuals who support and enjoy the shared benefits of community swimming.

Polly Shute expresses excitement as she anticipates The Big Dip becoming a yearly tradition, one that not only raises funds for significant causes such as Switchboard but also reinforces community bonding and collective wellness. The event serves as a lively testament to how swimming can serve as a powerful connector among people, fostering a safe, inclusive space where everyone, regardless of their level of experience in the water, can flourish.

As preparations finalise and anticipation builds, Brighton’s Big Dip stands poised to become a notable occasion combining sport, community spirit, and a celebration of diversity, wrapped up with a splash of fun on Brighton’s iconic seafront.
