In a heartfelt interview, British-Nigerian singer Darkoo discusses her experience of coming out as a lesbian to her Nigerian parents, revealing challenges and the support she has received from her family.

British-Nigerian Singer Darkoo Opens Up About Coming Out to Parents

In a candid interview on The Appointment Show with Layo, British-Nigerian singer Darkoo shared her personal journey of coming out as a lesbian to her Nigerian parents. The emotional conversation has sparked a wave of reactions from fans, highlighting the cultural and personal challenges faced by the artist.

When asked about her experience, Darkoo conveyed a sense of relief and happiness that followed her revelation. “The day I told my mum I felt a massive weight off my shoulders, and I’ve been happy since then,” the singer shared. She emphasised the newfound happiness she experiences now that she is open about her sexuality with her family and in her professional life. “Now that everyone around me knows, I feel happier,” she added.

Darkoo detailed the differing reactions from her parents. While her father was less inclined to discuss the matter deeply, her mother found the revelation more emotional due to their close bond. “It was harder with my mum because I’m closer to her, and it was very emotional,” she noted. Yet, even though her father did not want an extensive conversation, he did not halt it either, indicating a tacit acceptance.

Despite any reservations her parents might hold due to cultural beliefs, Darkoo highlighted their unwavering love and support. “I have parents who love me for me,” she said, expressing gratitude for their acceptance despite acknowledging they might not fully agree with her choices. “At the end of the day, I’m living my life for me, and that’s what I’m doing.”

Darkoo also spoke about how her disclosure has allowed her to live more authentically. “This is what makes me happy, and I feel whole. I don’t feel like I’m faking it or doing what I don’t want to do,” she stated. She further emphasised her spiritual beliefs, underscoring that her relationship with God is a source of strength and reassurance. “I feel like I have a good relationship with God. My heart is clean and pure, and I’m loving.”

Confronting traditional and cultural expectations, Darkoo’s statement that she can now bring girls home without any issues shows a remarkable level of family support. “They love me, and that’s what it is,” the singer concluded, underlining the importance of familial love and acceptance amid personal revelations.

Darkoo’s openness about her journey and her parents’ response underscores a narrative of acceptance and love, offering insight into her personal life away from the public eye.
