The 2023 San Sebastián Film Festival showcases a remarkable 27 films from Catalonia, highlighting the region’s dynamic filmmaking landscape across various categories and genres.

San Sebastián: Catalonia Dominates the Silver Screen with 27 Titles at Film Festival

SAN SEBASTIAN — A striking representation of Catalan cinema marks the 2023 San Sebastián Film Festival, as Catalonia brings an impressive collection of 27 films, spanning various categories and genres. This year’s festival sees a strong Catalan presence in the Main Competition, Made in Spain, and other notable sections, showcasing the region’s dynamic filmmaking landscape.

Main Competition Highlights

Among the entries in the Main Competition is “Afternoons of Solitude,” a documentary from Andergraun Films, Ideale Audience, and LaCima Producciones. Directed by Albert Serra, it introspectively portrays the life of star bullfighter Andrés Roca Rey. Serra has approached this project “with respect and innocence, without prejudice nor provocation,” highlighting the raw and pure essence of the famed bullfighter’s world.

Another noteworthy entry is “Glimmers,” a collaborative effort by Inicia Films, Mod Producciones, and Misent Producciones. Directed by Pilar Palomero, known for her award-winning works “Schoolgirls” and “La Maternal,” “Glimmers” features Patricia López Arnaíz and Antonio de la Torre. The film explores the intricate dynamics between a woman and her sudden responsibility to care for her estranged, hospitalized ex-husband after a fifteen-year separation.

From the UK, “Hard Truths” by Mike Leigh, features a lauded performance by Jean-Baptiste. The film, produced by The Mediapro Studio and Thin Man Films, previously received positive acclaim at the Toronto Film Festival and builds a compelling, if at times prickly, narrative around interwoven personal histories.

Pedro Martín Calero’s “The Wailing” emerges from collaboration among numerous international producers, including Caballo Films and Setembro Cine. This genre film, starring Ester Expósito, delves into supernatural elements tied to the lives of three women across two decades and vast distances.

Horizon Latinos and New Directors Sections

“Maybe it’s True What They Say About Us,” a thriller produced by Storyboard Media and others, dives deep into themes of generational trauma and accountability. This film catches the audience’s attention with its tense narrative involving psychiatrist Ximena and her daughter Tamara, whose baby disappears within a mysterious sect.

The New Directors section features the second film by Cecilia Atán and Valeria Pivato, “Surfacing,” which narrates the emotional journey of Sofía, played by Maricel Álvarez, as she grapples with her son’s imprisonment and her quest for personal happiness. Produced by Tarea Fina, Tandem Films, and Setembro Cine, it offers a heartfelt exploration of familial bonds and personal freedom.

Special Screenings and Documentaries

The Velodrome section introduces “Celeste,” a thriller by Movistar Plus+, The Mediapro Studio, and 100 Balas. Starring Carmen Machi, the film presents a suspense-filled storyline where a tax inspector seeks to prove the tax evasion of a Latina pop star, offering a blend of tension and introspection.

In the Zinemira category, “Ciento Volando” by Bixagu Entertainment takes viewers on a contemplative journey through Chillida Leku, combining the natural and artistic genius of sculptor Eduardo Chillida through the eyes of a young girl. Directed by Arantxa Aguirre, renowned in Spanish documentary filmmaking, this work captures the harmonious interplay between human creation and nature.

Other Noteworthy Inclusions

Rodrigo Cortés’ “Escape,” a reverse escape thriller by Nostromo, stars Mario Casas and Anna Castillo. As described by producer Adrián Guerra, the film is an “exciting escape told in reverse,” offering a unique twist on traditional jailbreak narratives.

The biographical film “May I Speak With the Enemy,” produced by Pecado Films and Arcadia Motion Pictures, portrays the Spanish Civil War era of famed comedian Miguel Gila. This piece brings together historical narrative and personal struggle, capturing a pivotal figure in Spanish cultural history.

Several films in the Made in Spain section, such as “Little Loves” and “Holy Mother,” also stand out, revealing the depth and diversity in topics ranging from familial relationships to historical fables.

Classics and Animation

The Klasikoak showcase highlights “Tattoo, the First Adventure of Pepe Carvalho,” directed by Bigas Luna. The 1976 film adapts the first crime novel from Manuel Vázquez Montalbán and introduces Carvalho, a character blending gourmet tastes with investigative acumen, setting a classic tone for Luna’s subsequent works.

Animated features like “Rock Bottom,” co-produced by AlbaSotorra and other studios, provide a vibrant, rotoscoped insight into the 1970s’ creative and tumultuous hippie culture.

Conclusion

With such a robust lineup, the 2023 San Sebastián Film Festival firmly underscores Catalonia’s prowess in contemporary cinema. These films not only represent regional talent but also span a wide array of narratives and genres, promising diverse and stimulating viewing experiences for festival-goers. The festival continues to serve as a pivotal platform, celebrating cinematic excellence and encouraging cultural exchange.
