The 16th annual Dorian Awards recognise exceptional talent in mainstream and LGBTQ-specific films, with leading nominations from A24 and standout works like ‘I Saw the TV Glow’.
The 16th annual Dorian Awards, hosted by GALECA: The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics, have unveiled their nominees, recognising excellence in both mainstream and LGBTQ-specific films. This year’s announcement highlights a broad array of talent and artistic expression within the LGBTQ+ community.
Leading the nominations is film studio A24, securing an impressive tally of 25 nominations. Not far behind are Amazon MGM with 13, Netflix with 11, and Mubi with 10 nominations. The prominence of A24 underscores its significant contribution to contemporary cinema, particularly in showcasing stories that resonate with LGBTQ+ audiences.
Notably, Jane Schoenbrun’s film, I Saw the TV Glow, has emerged as a frontrunner, garnering nine nominations. Among these, it has been nominated for Film of the Year, LGBTQ Film of the Year, and Schoenbrun herself is up for Director, Screenplay, and LGBTQ Screenplay of the Year. The film also features performances nominated in key categories, including Film Performance of the Year for Justice Smith and Supporting Film Performance of the Year for Brigette Lundy-Paine.
Following closely is The Substance, which has received eight nominations, including Film of the Year and nods for both Demi Moore in the Film Performance category and Margaret Qualley in Supporting Film Performance. The film’s extensive list of nominations also includes recognitions for Best Director and Best Screenplay.
Other films that have gained notable attention include the controversial trans musical Emilia Pérez and Challengers, directed by Luca Guadagnino, each receiving six nominations. In the Film Performance of the Year category, Karla Sofía Gascón becomes the sole trans actor nominated, alongside notable queer actors such as Cynthia Erivo and Colman Domingo.
The nominees for Film of the Year include Anora, Challengers, I Saw the TV Glow, Nickel Boys, and The Substance. For LGBTQ Film of the Year, the nominees are Challengers, I Saw the TV Glow, Emilia Pérez, Love Lies Bleeding, and Queer.
Additionally, the We’re Wilde About You Rising Star award features emerging talents such as Jonathan Bailey, Vera Drew, and Karla Sofía Gascón. Meanwhile, renowned filmmakers like Luca Guadagnino and Jane Schoenbrun are in the running for the Wilde Artist and LGBTQIA+ Film Trailblazer awards, facing off against other artistic figures including Cynthia Erivo and Tilda Swinton. Vera Drew also receives a nod for her trailblazing efforts in The People’s Joker.
Winners for the Dorian Awards will be announced on February 13, marking a significant date for the celebration of LGBTQ+ cinema and culture. The event continues to play a vital role in acknowledging and amplifying diverse voices and narratives within the entertainment industry, particularly those related to lesbian culture and experiences.
