In a rare public outing, music icon Sir Elton John graced the Attitude Awards 2024 to accept the prestigious Legacy Award. The event, held at the historic Roundhouse in Camden, London on Wednesday evening, saw Elton John, at 77, take the stage amidst a congregation of luminaries from the showbiz realm.
The accolade, presented to him by fellow musician Ed Sheeran, holds significant meaning for Sir Elton as he reflected on his journey and identity. During his acceptance speech, he expressed the deep personal significance of the recognition, stating, “I’m very humbled by this award, it means a lot as a gay man.” Sir Elton shared his enduring happiness in his personal life, subtly highlighting his love for his husband, David Furnish, and their children.
Reflecting on his illustrious career that spans six decades, Sir Elton remarked with emotion, “I’m married to my work, I love music. Music saved me when I was happy, it saved me when I was miserable.” His musical journey, intertwined with his philanthropic efforts, particularly through the Elton John Foundation, has been a cornerstone of his life. Together with David Furnish, who serves as the CEO of the foundation, they have successfully raised $600 million, underscoring their commitment to various humanitarian causes.
This award marks only the second time in 13 years that the Legacy Award has been bestowed, the previous recipient being Prince Harry in 2017, commemorating 20 years since the death of his mother, Diana, Princess of Wales. Ed Sheeran, before presenting the award, highlighted the unique prestige of the honour, noting its focus on more than just a notable career or lifetime achievements, but a deeper cause.
The evening was a celebration of contributions to and representations of the LGBTQ+ community, powered by Jaguar and supported by Virgin Atlantic. Among other awardees, the event honoured Scottish singer Lulu, who received The Honorary Gay Award. Lulu shared the spotlight with other notable recipients, including Jessica Gunning who took home The Culture Award, and American DJ The Blessed Madonna, who won The Music Award. Eurovision winner Nemo was named Person of the Year, and Mawaan Rizwan was recognised with The Comedy Award.
