First drag artist confirmed for Strictly Come Dancing Christmas special

Tayce, a finalist from RuPaul’s Drag Race UK, makes history as the first drag artist to participate in the iconic show’s Christmas special, bringing a mix of glamour and excitement to the ballroom.

In a groundbreaking move for the beloved British television show, Strictly Come Dancing, a drag artist will participate in the Christmas special for the first time. Tayce, a notable figure from RuPaul’s Drag Race UK, has been confirmed to join the 2024 lineup. The Wales-born presenter and model is set to bring her vibrant personality and talents to the Strictly ballroom.

Tayce, who wowed audiences as a finalist in the second series of the drag-based reality show, is also known for her work as a radio presenter and her career in modelling. Daughter of Roger Radix, a former bass player for Wham!, the 30-year-old has diversified her talents across various entertainment fields, including releasing a rap single titled Swagzilla. She has also hosted a series of BBC radio shows and co-hosted MTV’s Queerpiphany alongside model Munroe Bergdorf.

Partnered with professional dancer Kai Widdrington, Tayce expressed her excitement about joining the competition. “I cannot wait to ‘sleigh’ on the Strictly ballroom floor,” she stated. “My partner and I are going to dance for our lives. In all seriousness, it’s an incredible honour to be the first drag artist to be taking part in Strictly Come Dancing. I hope I do all of my Drag Race and Welsh fans proud. Sign me up for all the glitz, glam and disco balls.”

Though this marks the first time a drag artist will participate in the competition, the show has previously featured drag-themed performances. In 2023, actor Layton Williams performed in drag during the series, taking on the persona of Betty Rizzo from Grease in a memorable performance with professional partner Nikita Kuzmin. Additionally, RuPaul’s Drag Race UK judge Michelle Visage competed in the 2019 series alongside Giovanni Pernice, being eliminated as the eighth celebrity.

The inclusion of Tayce on the show follows the announcement of comedian Josh Widdecombe as the first celebrity for this year’s Christmas special. He will dance with professional partner Karen Hauer. The festive episode will feature a total of six couples, each delivering routines designed to impress judges Craig Revel Horwood, Motsi Mabuse, Anton Du Beke, and Shirley Ballas, as well as the voting studio audience.

The news of Tayce’s participation was revealed on Strictly’s sister show, It Takes Two, where the rest of the lineup is yet to be announced. The Christmas special promises to be a spectacular showcase of talent, festive spirit, and, undoubtedly, an abundance of glitter and glamour.
