GK Barry opens up about coming out and her relationship with Ella Rutherford

Social media star GK Barry shares insights on her relationship with footballer Ella Rutherford and her journey of coming out, promoting dialogue around sexual identity while facing the challenges of public scrutiny.

Popular social media star GK Barry, renowned for her comedic prowess and lively podcast, has candidly shared insights into her personal life, specifically her journey of coming out and her relationship with female footballer Ella Rutherford. Currently appearing in the 2024 edition of ITV’s “I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here!”, Barry has become a significant voice in promoting dialogue around sexual identity.

During a heartfelt conversation in the celebrity jungle camp with fellow contestant Dean McCullough, GK Barry opened up about her experiences of coming out to her parents. Barry recounted that, while she had previously discussed her experiences with women openly online, she had primarily dated men until meeting her current partner. The accidental meeting with Ella Rutherford, facilitated by a mutual friend, marked a pivotal moment in Barry’s life. She confessed that upon meeting Rutherford, she developed an immediate attraction, unbeknownst to her parents, who only learned about the relationship during a family visit when curious inquiries about “Who’s Ella?” prompted Barry to reply straightforwardly: “Oh, she’s my girlfriend.”

Revealing her parents’ positive reaction, Barry humorously noted that her parents were possibly aware all along, quipping that “the closet may have been glass.” She emphasized the unconditional support from her family, remarking that their main concern was her happiness, regardless of her partner’s gender.

GK Barry further divulged her past insecurities, sharing anecdotes from her school days where physical awkwardness and self-doubt loomed large. She attributed her development of a sense of humour, in part, to watching comedies like Miranda, which helped her gain social acceptance.

The conversation also highlighted the challenges of dealing with online negativity, a common issue faced by many public figures. Barry described the relentless scrutiny and harsh critique from internet trolls, particularly focusing on her red carpet appearances. Jane McDonald, Barry’s campmate, offered perspective and advice drawn from her own experiences in show business. She advocated for self-acceptance and resilience over attempting to conform for others’ acceptance, encouraging Barry to embrace her authentic self regardless of public opinion.

Despite the trolls’ attempts to dim her shine, GK Barry has openly embraced her identity and relationship with Ella. The previously low-key nature of their relationship became more public when Barry posted a heartfelt birthday message to Rutherford on social media, expressing her love and appreciation.

In previous discussions, Barry has affirmed her commitment to her current relationship, expressing relief and happiness in finding love with a woman. Her past experiences with men have left her resolved to not return to heterosexual relationships, a choice she describes as leading to a newfound sense of fulfillment and vitality, whimsically referred to as the “lesbian glow.”

Barry’s revelations and openness have added a positive narrative in the broader discourse on LGBTQ+ relationships and identity, resonating with many who appreciate her candidness and humour in navigating personal and public spheres. As her journey unfolds, the story of GK Barry and Ella Rutherford continues to capture hearts and inspire those following their story.
