The 2024 Golden Globe Awards nominations showcase a remarkable presence of LGBTQIA narratives, making this year notable for its inclusive storytelling in both film and television.
The 2024 Golden Globe Awards nominations have been unveiled, showcasing a significant presence of LGBTQIA representation in both film and television. This year has been dubbed the “Year of the Lez” in acknowledgment of the impressive lesbian narratives and inclusive content that have emerged in recent months.
The nominations were announced on 9 December, and they reflect an ongoing trend of increased visibility for queer storytelling. Leading the film category is Emilia Pérez, which has garnered an impressive total of ten nominations. This musical tells the story of a trans cartel leader who fakes their death to transition safely, and it has been nominated for Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy) amongst other categories. Notably, lead actress Karla Sofía Gascón made history earlier this year as the first trans woman to win Best Actress at both the Cannes Film Festival and the European Film Awards; she stands out as a frontrunner for the upcoming Oscars as well.
Other films with notable queer themes receiving nominations include Challengers, which features a queer main character, Patrick Zweig, and has been recognised with four nominations. The animated film Memoir Of A Snail, which includes a gay supporting character, and Wicked, which boasts a largely queer cast and has resonated with the LGBTQIA community, are also among the nominees.
In the music category, Miley Cyrus’s song Beautiful That Way, created for The Last Showgirl, is nominated for Best Original Song. Additionally, celebrities such as Angelina Jolie, who is recognised for her role in Maria, and Cynthia Erivo, nominated for her portrayal of Elphaba in Wicked, have received accolades in their respective categories. Colman Domingo is also nominated for Best Actor for his performance in Sing Sing.
Television nominations similarly reflect queer representation. Shows such as Hacks, Baby Reindeer, Only Murders In The Building, Abbot Elementary, and Ripley have all been recognised, with many featuring LGBTQIA characters. The Bear, Disclaimer, and True Detective: Night Country also received nods for their queer casts.
Among the nominated individuals, non-binary actor Emma D’Arcy made waves for their portrayal of Rhaenyra Targaryen, who, in season two, shared a kiss with Mysaria, thus becoming canonically queer. Veteran actress Jodie Foster garnered a nomination for her role in True Detective: Night Country, where she also recently won an Emmy. Other notable queer nominees include Ayo Edebiri, Hannah Einbinder, Jessica Gunning, and Andrew Scott, alongside Selena Gomez and Kathryn Hahn, nominated for their performances as sapphic characters in Only Murders In The Building and Agatha All Along, respectively.
As 2024 marks the 30th anniversary of DIVA magazine in print, the publication underscores the significance of supporting LGBTQIA media to ensure the continued visibility and celebration of queer voices within the cultural landscape.
