Google reveals top trending drinks and cocktails for 2024

The latest report from Google highlights the rise of beverages like the Sleepy Girl Mocktail and Porn Star Martini, reflecting changing consumer preferences.

Google has unveiled its top trending searches for 2024, revealing a fascinating insight into consumer preferences within the food and drink sector. Amid a range of topics, trendsetters in the drinks category have emerged, notably highlighted in a report released by The Drinks Business.

One of the standout entries is the Sleepy Girl Mocktail, which gained massive popularity through social media platform TikTok, amassing millions of views. This innovative drink secured the ninth position in the top ten trending ‘food and drink recipe’ searches in the US and eighth globally. Comprising tart cherry juice, magnesium powder, and a fizzy mixer like soda or sparkling water, the Sleepy Girl Mocktail is designed as a soothing, pre-bedtime beverage. It leverages the natural sleep hormone melatonin, found in tart cherries, to promote better sleep. The drink’s formulation also aims to alleviate stress with its anti-inflammatory properties. However, experts have advised caution, noting that certain magnesium supplements may induce laxative effects.

The report from The Drinks Business also highlights the rise of the Porn Star Martini, which emerged as the top trending cocktail search in the United States for 2024. Developed by Ghanaian-British bar owner Douglas Ankrah at the LAB cocktail bar in Soho, London, in the early 2000s, the cocktail blends vodka, passion fruit, vanilla, lime juice, and Passoã. Reflecting on the cocktail’s evocative nature, Ankrah remarked to The Buyer, “I called it the Porn Star Martini because I thought it was something that a porn star would drink. It’s pure indulgence, sexy, fun and evocative.” This drink has become synonymous with high taste and innovation in cocktail culture.

Interestingly, the ongoing allure of the Porn Star Martini has also permeated British culture, as the search term “how to make a Porn Star Martini” featured among the top five trending ‘how to’ searches in the UK. This surpasses searches relating to major events such as the logistics of watching the Olympics or witnessing natural phenomena like the Northern Lights.

The top trending cocktail searches in 2024 are dominated by vodka-based drinks, a fact suggesting a potential resurgence for the spirit despite its recent decline in popularity. The list encompasses a variety of well-loved cocktails, including the Honey deuce, Hugo spritz, Gin fizz, Dirty martini, Lychee martini, Carajillo, Dark ‘N’ stormy, and the Lemon drop martini. The prominence of vodka cocktails in trending searches, alongside the rising popularity of ready-to-drink (RTD) spirits, reinforces its staying power in the market.

The Drinks Business report provides a snapshot of evolving trends in the beverage industry as consumer interests and tastes continue to shape the landscape leading towards the end of the year.
