The International Eressos Women’s Festival brings together women from around the globe each September to celebrate unity, empowerment, and the legacy of Sappho on the beautiful Greek island of Lesvos.

International Eressos Women’s Festival: Celebrating Sappho Women on the Island of Lesvos

The picturesque village of Eressos, located on the Greek island of Lesvos, comes alive each September as women from around the world gather to celebrate the International Eressos Women’s Festival. Originating in 2000, this annual event has grown to become a symbol of unity, empowerment, and the celebration of women’s culture, set against the backdrop of the birthplace of the ancient Greek poet Sappho.

The festival was conceived by Sappho Women, a dedicated organisation that aims to honour the legacy of Sappho, a renowned poetess known for her lyric poetry and her expressions of love and admiration for women. Sappho’s influence and historical significance have rendered Eressos a compelling destination, particularly for members of the LGBTQ+ community.

For two weeks, the usually tranquil village of Eressos transforms into a hive of activity. The festival offers a rich tapestry of events, including workshops, musical performances, film screenings, art exhibitions, and wellness activities. Attendees can participate in yoga sessions on the beach, indulge in Greek cuisine, and engage in discussions and educational panels that address various issues pertinent to women and the LGBTQ+ community.

One of the festival’s key highlights is the Sappho Women’s Talent Show, a platform where attendees showcase their creative talents, be it singing, dancing, poetry, or other forms of artistic expression. This event encapsulates the spirit of the festival, fostering an environment of encouragement and mutual celebration.

The festival also places a strong emphasis on inclusivity and accessibility. It strives to create a safe and welcoming space for women from diverse backgrounds and life experiences. This inclusivity extends to the local community, which benefits economically from the influx of visitors and engages in the cross-cultural exchange that the festival facilitates.

In keeping with the festival’s ethos of eco-consciousness, organisers implement sustainable practices. From reducing plastic waste to promoting local products and services, the festival aligns itself with broader environmental goals, ensuring that its impact on Eressos is positive and lasting.

The International Eressos Women’s Festival is more than just a festival; it is a movement that celebrates the strength, creativity, and resilience of women. It honours the ancient legacy of Sappho, while simultaneously addressing contemporary issues and fostering a global network of supportive women.

As the Eressos Women’s Festival continues to grow, it serves as a beacon of cultural celebration and solidarity, drawing women from around the world to the historic and beautiful island of Lesvos. It is a testament to the enduring power of community and the unifying strength of shared values and experiences.
