A recent study reveals London as the leading city for Instagram hashtags, followed by Paris and Moscow, highlighting the impact of social media on travel destinations.
In a recent study conducted by the travel website Hipsy, 43 European capitals were evaluated to determine their popularity on the social media platform Instagram. The analysis focused on several factors, including the number of Instagram hashtags, annual visitors, sunshine hours, and notable photo hotspots within each city. Ultimately, the final rankings were determined by the sheer volume of hashtags associated with each city.
Leading the list as the most Instagrammable city in Europe is London, United Kingdom. A city rich in history and renowned for its architectural marvels, London boasts a staggering 167 million hashtags on Instagram. Its iconic landmarks such as the Big Ben clock tower, Tower Bridge, and the medieval Tower of London contribute to its high social media engagement. The city draws an impressive 30 million visitors every year and enjoys 1,633 hours of sunshine annually, making it a perennial favourite for budding photographers and social media aficionados.
Paris, France, follows closely with 145 million hashtags. Known as the City of Light, Paris tops the list as the most visited European capital, attracting a remarkable 50 million visitors annually. The Eiffel Tower, one of the world’s most recognisable structures, serves as a prime location for Instagram enthusiasts eager to capture the essence of Paris. Despite ranking second in the number of hashtags, Paris’ romantic allure and cultural richness remain unparalleled.
In third place is Moscow, Russia, a city known for its austere beauty and historical significance. The Russian capital has garnered 56 million hashtags. Although it attracts fewer visitors compared to London and Paris, with 24 million annually, Moscow’s Red Square stands out as a preferred locale for photographers. Its unique architectural style and vibrant history offer a striking backdrop for social media.
While these three cities dominate the list, the survey also highlights other European capitals that are notable for their Instagram popularity. Vienna, Austria, for instance, rounds out the top ten, with 16 million hashtags, showcasing its classical charm and picturesque landscapes. These cities collectively represent a diverse range of cultural and architectural styles, contributing to Europe’s reputation as a treasure trove of photogenic locales.
The study underpins the significance of social media in modern travel planning, as destinations are increasingly chosen and experienced through the lens of potential photographic opportunities. This trend reflects a growing desire among travellers to visually document and share their experiences in some of the world’s most admired locations.
