Mary Earps, England’s national women’s football team goalkeeper, becomes the first female professional footballer to be immortalised in wax at Madame Tussauds London, celebrating her contributions and popularity in the sport.
Mary Earps, the celebrated goalkeeper for England’s national women’s football team, has been immortalised with a wax figure at the renowned Madame Tussauds in London, making history as the first female professional footballer to receive such an accolade. This development follows a fan vote, which awarded Earps this honour, acknowledging her contributions to women’s football and celebrating her increasing popularity among fans.
The London attraction chose Earps, who plays for Paris Saint-Germain, to be commemorated in wax following an overwhelming majority decision in a public poll that sought to honour a star from England’s successful Lioness squad. The 31-year-old footballer has thus joined an illustrious line-up of figures represented at the museum, which includes notable personalities such as Sir David Attenborough, Emmeline Pankhurst, music artist Stormzy, and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
For over a year, Madame Tussauds collaborated closely with Earps to accurately capture her likeness for the wax figure, which was officially unveiled to the public on 15 November. The unveiling ceremony was a well-attended event, with many fans, along with Earps’ family and friends, gathering to witness the historic occasion. Earps expressed her excitement and gratitude during the event, stating the significance of the representation extends beyond herself to reflect the burgeoning stature of women’s football.
Dressed in the kit worn during the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup Final, the wax figure bears a striking resemblance to Earps. The Nottingham-born athlete shared her astonishment at the realism of the figure, remarking on her family’s delighted reaction, particularly her grandmother, who was present to share in the celebration.
Steve Blackburn, general manager at Madame Tussauds London, praised Earps as a remarkable trailblazer who has inspired many through her performance on the field and her leadership off it. He expressed the institution’s pride in featuring her likeness, acknowledging her as an influential figure in modern sports.
Earps’ career reached a peak when she played an instrumental role in leading England to victory in the UEFA Women’s Euro 2022, a success that saw her honoured with an MBE in recognition of her sporting achievements. Her inclusion at Madame Tussauds marks another milestone in highlighting the growing recognition and support for women’s football.
The wax figure now takes its place amongst other cultural icons at Madame Tussauds’ Baker Street site in London, offering visitors a chance to celebrate the influence and success of a prominent figure in women’s sport today.
