In a departure from traditional high fashion, Matthieu Blazy’s Spring 2025 collection for Bottega Veneta invites guests into a whimsical world of childhood nostalgia and genuine creativity, marked by playful designs and an emphasis on sincerity.

Matthieu Blazy’s Spring 2025 Bottega Veneta Show Embraces Childlike Wonder and Sincere Exploration

Milan, 23rd September 2024—In a fashion arena often dominated by sharp edges and high expectations, Matthieu Blazy’s Spring 2025 Bottega Veneta show provided a refreshing breath of childlike wonder and sincerity. The event, held in Milan, broke from tradition right at the entryway with a welcoming display of whimsical animal bean bag chairs in place of the typical seating. These chairs—designed to resemble foxes, penguins, and ladybugs—were the creation of Italian design firm Sacco Zanato, transforming the setting with vibrant nostalgia.

Guests, including Algerian boxer Imane Khelif, actor Jacob Elordi, and Jools Lebron of “demure” fame, found themselves seated among these imaginative creations. The animal pillows were intended to evoke the iconic scene from the film E.T., where Elliot’s closet is brimming with stuffed animals, a symbolic touch that invited the audience into a realm of exploration. This nod to the sweetness of freedom and childhood curiosity stood in stark contrast to the often rigid and strategic nature of the fashion industry. “This is about the power of sincerity over strategy,” Blazy stated, setting the tone for the collection.

Blazy’s interpretation of this theme came to life through silhouettes that resembled a child playing dress-up with oversized parental clothes. The show opened with tailored looks in sophisticated shades of gray and red, characterised by their exaggerated dimensions. Innovations like trousers cut asymmetrically—one leg ending below the knee and the other stretching past the ankle—added a surreal twist to classic suiting. A deep red jumpsuit incorporating both a wrap skirt and a pant leg on opposite sides exemplified this playful dichotomy.

Among the standout pieces was an elongated cream leather vest, showcasing elegant craftsmanship, and a pale bomber jacket featuring an Intrecciato leather collar, both designed with an impactful oversized fit. Blazy further augmented the collection with deceptive fabrics: stonewashed denim that, upon closer inspection, revealed itself to be merino wool woven into jacquard patterns, tailored to a fine finish. This transformation of the disheveled into the sophisticated embodied the collection’s underlying ethos of curiosity and surprise.

The whimsical animal theme extended onto the runway pieces themselves, with charming bunnies adorning leather t-shirts and frogs artistically wrapped around the heels of shoes. A notably captivating garment was the curving, all-leather paillette evening dress, epitomising Blazy’s masterful craftsmanship and imaginative flourish.

Overall, the Spring 2025 Bottega Veneta show was a striking blend of ingenuous playfulness and refined elegance, marking a delightful departure from business-as-usual in high fashion. Readers and fashion enthusiasts will likely find inspiration in Blazy’s unique approach, which injects a buoyant sense of joy and creativity into contemporary fashion narratives. The collection appears poised to resonate strongly within the industry and beyond, highlighting the designer’s innovative vision and commitment to authenticity.
