Renowned for its focus on pop music and queer culture, the Mighty Hoopla festival will take place across various venues in Malta from 26 to 29 September 2025.
Mighty Hoopla, a festival renowned for its emphasis on pop music, alternative styles, and queer culture, is set to make its debut in Malta in 2025. The London-based festival, which has been hosted since 2017, said farewell to its annual sister event, the Mighty Hoopla Weekender, in January, signalling a new direction for the brand.
Scheduled to take place from 26–29 September 2025, the Mighty Hoopla Weekender will be relocated to various venues across Malta. Notable locations will include Cafe Del Mar in St. Paul’s Bay, Gianpula Village, which boasts a capacity of 6,000, the exclusive Bora Bora hotel, and Little Armier Beach, offering a private beach setting.
Although the festival’s lineup has yet to be revealed, organisers have indicated that attendees can expect performances from popular UK artists alongside a selection of prominent European LGBTQ+ talents and collectives. Previous iterations of Mighty Hoopla in London have featured familiar names such as Sugababes, Steps, Jessie Ware, Cheryl, Chaka Khan, TLC, Kelly Rowland, and Kelis.
Malta’s appeal as a host for summer festivals is enhanced by its pleasant climate, boasting approximately 300 days of sunshine each year, combined with picturesque beaches. However, the decision to hold Mighty Hoopla in Malta also reflects the nation’s strong commitment to LGBTQ+ rights.
A statement from the festival highlighted Malta’s advancements in this area, noting, “Since October 2015, ILGA-Europe has ranked Malta No.1 in terms of LGBTQ+ rights legislation out of 49 observed European countries, a ranking it has upheld for over 9 years now.” The festival underscores that Malta is one of the few countries globally to have established constitutional equality for LGBTQ+ rights.
Originally launched in Victoria Park, London, in 2017, the festival has undergone several changes in location and organisation over the years. In 2018, it relocated to Brockwell Park in south London due to a contract securing exclusive use of Victoria Park for events by AEG Presents/Goldenvoice. Subsequent movements saw Field Day shift to warehouse venues, while Mighty Hoopla continued to thrive at Brockwell Park.
In 2022, Mighty Hoopla transitioned into a two-day format, with events occurring on Friday and Saturday, allowing for further expansion with the addition of Cross The Tracks on Sundays. Both festivals were later acquired by Superstruct Entertainment in 2023.
The flagship Mighty Hoopla festival is scheduled to return to Brockwell Park on 31 May and 1 June 2025, featuring a range of acts including Ciara, Kesha, Jojo, Loreen, G Flip, Kate Nash, and Moonchild Sanelly, among others.
