London is set to welcome The Arzner, its first dedicated LGBTQ+ cinema, honouring pioneering filmmaker Dorothy Arzner and aiming to create a cultural hub for the community.
New LGBTQ+ Cinema to Open in Bermondsey by Year-End
London’s diverse cinema scene is set to welcome a unique new venue by the end of the year. Named The Arzner, this establishment will become the city’s first dedicated LGBTQ+ cinema, adding to the capital’s rich tapestry of independent movie theatres. The cinema is named in honour of Dorothy Arzner, a pioneering lesbian filmmaker renowned for her contributions in the 1930s and 40s, which often explored women’s roles in society.
The Arzner will occupy the former site of the Kino cinema in Bermondsey, which closed its doors in January 2023. The initiative is led by Simon Burke and Piers Greenlees, who have previously opened the area’s first LGBTQ+ pub, The Rising SE1.
In a statement reflecting on the UK’s significant role in producing notable LGBTQ+ films, Piers Greenlees expressed his excitement about the upcoming venture: “The Arzner, named after a forgotten legend and vital queer filmmaker Dorothy Arzner, will be a new cultural space for the community. We look forward to welcoming all to The Arzner.”
The venue will offer a cinematic experience for around 50 people, with an additional cocktail bar capable of accommodating up to 150 patrons. Designed to be fully accessible, The Arzner aims to ensure that everyone can enjoy its cinematic offerings and events.
During a recent Southwark Council licensing meeting, Simon Burke highlighted the significance of the venue: “We are currently the only LGBTQ+ pub in SE1 and this to our knowledge will be the only LGBTQ+ cinema in all of London. This licence will allow us to operate a safe space for all in one of the most LGBTQ+ densely populated areas of the country.”
While an exact opening date and film programme have yet to be announced, The Arzner is slated to open in late 2024. Located at 10 Bermondsey Square, SE1 3UN, the cinema will be easily accessible, with the nearest station being Bermondsey.
This new addition to London’s cultural landscape promises to provide a dedicated space for LGBTQ+ cinema, further enriching the city’s diverse film offerings.
