Amazon-owned Ring has launched Smart Video Search, an innovative AI feature that simplifies video footage retrieval, minimizing the need for manual searching and enhancing user convenience.
Ring, the Amazon-owned company known for its smart doorbells, has unveiled an innovative feature designed to enhance the user experience by leveraging artificial intelligence (AI). This new addition, named Smart Video Search, aims to streamline the process of locating specific footage within volumes of recorded video—a task that typically requires users to sift manually through clips to find relevant moments.
Currently, while Ring’s technology is adept at identifying intruders, pinpointing exact occurrences, such as identifying a red car linked to a local crime or figuring out who knocked over the garbage cans, necessitated time-consuming manual searching. However, Smart Video Search promises to transform this procedure. By allowing users to input straightforward queries into the Ring app, they can quickly identify the desired clip without the usual hassle of scrolling through lengthy footage.
The Smart Video Search is set to debut as a public beta before a full-scale launch. Upon availability, users will be able to search for various categories — animals, locations, packages, people, specific times, vehicles, weather conditions, and even particular activities such as jumping or running. This sophisticated AI tool will function across all Ring video doorbells and cameras, aiming to keep users informed about significant events involving their homes, families, pets, businesses, or personal interests, including wildlife.
To utilise this futuristic feature, users will need to subscribe to the newly introduced Ring Home Premium plan. This plan is part of Ring’s restructured subscription offerings, which now consist of three tiers. Previously dubbed Ring Protect, the revamped subscription includes Home Basic, Home Standard, and Home Premium.
The Home Basic plan remains the most economical, priced at £4.99 or $4.99 per month, supporting one device and maintaining video event history for up to 180 days. In addition to existing features, subscribers will receive new Video Preview Alerts—a feature that sends short video clips as push notifications to swiftly inform users of what triggered a motion alert.
Home Standard, formerly known as Protect Plus, is available for £7.99 or $9.99 monthly. This plan now includes an extended live view, permitting a continuous live camera feed for up to 30 minutes, offering users a more comprehensive monitoring capability.
The all-new Home Premium tier, topping the subscription levels at £15.99 or $19.99 monthly, covers an unlimited number of Ring devices in a user’s home and introduces 24/7 recording for the first time. While footage can be perpetually recorded, users have a 14-day window to review and download any significant clips they wish to preserve.
As the AI-powered Smart Video Search becomes integrated into Ring’s lineup, subscribers who opt for the Premium plan will likely find added convenience and efficiency in monitoring their spaces, thanks to the search tool’s ability to swiftly locate specific moments within a vast repository of recorded video.
