Why London Can’t Get Enough of the Negroni

London’s love for the Negroni is thriving, with new dedicated venues, creative variations, and seasonal offerings showcasing the city’s evolving cocktail scene and deepening appreciation for Italy’s iconic aperitif.

Last month saw Londoners raise their glasses in celebration of Negroni Week, a spirited tribute to one of Italy’s most iconic cocktails, Campari’s Negroni. Bars and restaurants across the city embraced the occasion with a variety of events including limited edition menus, art trails, and live music nights. Among these efforts, a handful of venues distinguished themselves by unveiling dedicated Negroni spots designed to remain open beyond the festivities, much to the delight of Negroni aficionados.

One standout is Equal Parts, whose Negroni Lounge serves as a love letter to this Campari-infused classic. The venue has perfected the cocktail bar atmosphere, combining expertly crafted drinks with an ambience that elevates the Negroni experience to a new level. Meanwhile, The Alchemist in Monument made history by launching the UK’s first Negroni bar in collaboration with Campari. This sleek, sophisticated space offers an impressive selection of seven Negroni variations, such as the Barrel-Aged Negroni and Negroni Sour, that draw heavily from Campari’s rich Italian heritage and signature ruby red allure.

In Nine Elms, Bar Brasso offers a unique twist on the Negroni tradition. By day a bakery and café, Bar Brasso transforms into a chic Milanese aperitivo bar by night. Founder Robin Gill, an advocate for authentic Italian culture, champions a dedicated Negroni Happy Hour featuring £5 Cocktails, alongside some of London’s most highly regarded Italian-inspired dishes. This collaboration with Campari strives to bring an authentic slice of Milanese aperitivo to the capital, marrying great drinks with great food in a convivial setting.

London’s love affair with the Negroni extends beyond these permanent fixtures. Padella, a well-known pasta institution in Shoreditch, offers a bargain for cocktail lovers with its £2 Negroni Nights running weekdays during happy hour and throughout International Negroni Week. Their house Negroni stands out for its complexity, thanks to a bespoke blend of three different vermouths that adds a subtle sweetness to the traditional recipe. This deal, initially tied to the special week, is set to continue, making Padella a must-visit for those chasing excellent value and quality Negronis.

Another noteworthy concept comes from Barts, a hidden Chelsea speakeasy that has transformed its secret garden into a ‘Negroni Forest’ in partnership with Monkey 47 Gin. This tropical-themed sanctuary offers a lush, immersive environment where guests can enjoy both classic and innovative twists on the Negroni, all while surrounded by evocative décor designed to heighten the sensory experience.

For those seeking seasonal innovation, Freud, a New York-style basement bar in London, has introduced a Winter Negroni— a warming variation that blends Campari, gin, vermouth, and Grand Marnier. This cocktail, part of their festive offering, reflects a growing trend of tailoring classic drinks to fit the mood and flavors of the seasons, providing a cozy refuge for cocktail lovers when the temperatures drop.

Together, these venues reflect London’s vibrant cocktail culture and its embrace of the Negroni not just as a drink but as an experience. From sleek urban lounges to charming hidden bars and lush garden sanctuaries, the city offers an evolving landscape for Negroni enthusiasts to explore and enjoy. As the popularity of the cocktail continues to surge, so too do the innovative and immersive ways in which it is celebrated, ensuring the Negroni remains a timeless favourite with a contemporary edge.

Please remember to drink responsibly. This offer is for those aged 18 and over.
