Worldwide attractions for thrill-seekers

Explore the most exhilarating global destinations that combine breathtaking views with heart-pumping activities, from China’s skywalk to Hawaii’s historic stairway.

The world is home to a multitude of exhilarating attractions that promise adventure, adrenaline, and breathtaking sights for those seeking thrills. These destinations challenge the courageous and reward them with unforgettable experiences, combining awe-inspiring landscapes with heart-pounding activities. Here are some of the most thrilling attractions across the globe.

In the Hunan Province of southern China, adventurers can experience the “Walk of Faith” – a skywalk made entirely of glass, suspended over a 1,200-metre drop. This glass platform extends 60 metres around Tianmen Mountain and is considered the longest of its kind in the world. Visitors must overcome their fear of heights to enjoy the stunning views of the Tianmen Mountain National Forest Park from a mere metre-wide walkway.

Over in Iceland, thrill-seekers can delve into the depths of the Thrihnukagigur volcano. Each summer, visitors can descend 122 metres into this dormant volcano’s magma chamber, the only of its kind accessible to tourists. The adventure begins with a trek over a lava field, followed by a descent using a converted lift. Once at the bottom, the visitors are left to marvel at the vibrant colours of the volcanic interior.

In Colombia, the Rock of Guatapé presents another challenge. Towering over 200 metres, its northern side is marked by a naturally occurring crack, where approximately 650 steps have been installed. The stairway zigzags up the rock, and a climb to the top rewards the brave with a panoramic view from an observation tower, complemented by a mix of restaurants and souvenir stands.

For those in Europe, Amsterdam offers a unique thrill with “Over The Edge,” officially Europe’s highest swing. Located on the 22nd floor of the A’DAM Tower, this double swing propels participants over the building’s edge 100 metres in the air, offering expansive views over the city’s historic centre, harbour, and waterways.

In China, the “Cloud Rainbow Swing” in Chongqing Province set a record when it opened in 2020. Regarded as the largest swing in the world, it hangs off a cliff edge, promising an adrenaline rush as participants swing at speeds up to 130 kilometres per hour, 800 metres above the ground.

Dubai, never one to shy away from superlatives, hosts Deep Dive Dubai, the deepest pool in the world since its opening in 2021. At 60 metres deep, the pool offers a submerged cityscape, including a sunken apartment and various leisure items, challenging divers to explore its abyss.

Canada’s contribution to the adrenaline list is the CN Tower’s “EdgeWalk” in Toronto. This hands-free walk around a ledge 356 metres high allows participants to gaze over the bustling city, secured only by a harness attached to overhead cables. Listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the highest of its kind, the attraction has drawn daring visitors since 2011.

The Czech Republic’s newest landmark, the Sky Bridge 721, is a marvel of engineering and nerves. Opened in 2022, it spans 721 metres across a valley near Králický Sněžník in Dolní Morava. Hanging 95 metres above the ground, the pedestrian suspension bridge boasts the title of the world’s longest.

Norway’s Trolltunga adds a scenic yet thrilling element to the mix. Situated on the edge of the Hardangervidda mountain plateau, this iconic rock formation juts out 900 metres above Lake Ringedalsvatnet. The challenging hike, best attempted between June and September, offers spectacular views but requires caution as it lacks safety barriers.

Lastly, Hawaii’s “Stairway to Heaven” or Haiku Stairs, located on the island of O’ahu, is set for dismantling in 2024. This steep hiking trail, offering perilous climbs and unmatched views, has long been closed to the public but remains a coveted adventure. Comprising 3,920 steps ascending the Koolau Range, the trek is steeped in military history but will soon exist only in memories and photographs.

These attractions, spread across the globe, offer a diverse range of activities for those who seek a combination of beauty and thrills. From volcanic descents to glass skywalks, they provide unique perspectives of the world’s natural and urban landscapes, all while pushing the limits of human courage and curiosity.
